Charge Warning Light / Volt Meter

Postby Old Rider » Sun Dec 31, 2017 3:47 pm

Hello,

Has anyone added a charge warning light or a voltage meter to their VTR? There is a place for a bulb in the lower left quadrant of the warning light panel and it would be an excellent place for the charge bulb.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I will be adding a volt meter to my bike at some stage, iv heard these bike like to over charge, if given the chance. I think a warning light is a great idea, will keep things looking clean.

I'm no sparky, but I believe you can get a relay that will only complete a connection when a specified voltage has been reached. This would be an ideal "switch" to activate a warning light.

I bought a digital panel meter (waterproof) from China and added it to a relay circuit I have for powering auxiliary lights in front.
I mounted it down on a round metal strut on the left side below the metering panel.
Use a red color to see it in daylight. Cost is about $4.
Be sure to get one that is waterproof..

Like my riding, I don't go very fast.

I found this home built charge light on the Super Hawk site.

Now that Radio Shack is gone, I am not sure where to get the pieces.

Another option is a store bought universal light.

This looks to be too large to fit into the third quadrant of the dash. The home built could have leads on both LEDs and fitted into the hole.

I found, about a year too late, the warning light for Gold Wings. The company is gone.

I am approaching 30,000 miles on the 250. I love this bike. Since I fixed the charging wires, I have had no problems with this bike.

Thanks everybody for your interest and comments.

HF has a cheap voltage indicator that i use on my '86 VFR's. look for the multi-LED "alternator tester".
