1988 VTR250 rear header removal help

Postby AICD99 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 10:34 am

Hello,
New member and owner of a 1988 VTR250. I have owned several V4 bikes and currently own a 2007 VFR800 and VT1100. Anyway, I have what appears to me to be an exhaust leak cooming from the rear header collar area. I sprayed some soapy water and could see some bubbles coming from around it. I also noticed that someone ahs replaced the left header nut. I wonder if the gasket is missing as the front has no leak at all. I have gaskets from when I changed my VF500F gaskets last year.
My question is what is the best approach to removing the rear header? I have an OEM service manual and it is really weak. It says " remove header" and a picture of it. It is really tight in there and will be difficult. Im wondering if removing the tire helps or the entire rear fender. I have seen it done with nothing removed in a Youtube video. Any ideas what socket set up would help too.

Thanks,
Paul

When I messed with my headers (engine swap), I had easy access...engine was out.
With it in, I have no clue. Sorry.

nuts are usually not too tight , so try using smaller 1/4" drive tools. ;) not an easy job as you'll need to loosen and remove the front header and other bolts holding the system together. it could be difficult to slip the rear header out of the joint a few inches below. big job. :?

My main problem is just having access to the rear left side header stud. The shock seems to block it a bit. I am trying to access from the swingarm and up to it. I spent an hour an was unable accomplish anything. The right side stud I was able to access between the brake switch spring and the swingarm. It was loose and when I tried to tighten it it slipped. Even if I can get them off I am not sure that I can back out those studs given the room to work in.

I was successful but only after pulling the rear wheel, fender and head breather box (conveniently in the way). A little coaxing to disconnect the header from the exhaust and it was free. As I suspected no rear gasket was in place and the front was mashed to nothing short of a flattened mess. Anyway I thought I had gaskets around but cant find them so I ordered new ones. The studs are fine I guess the acorn nut had been maxed out in the back due to no gasket so it felt loose but in reality had nowhere to go. I will tidy up the frame while everything is apart and paint. I need some new hoses for the drains from the breather box too. I am going to sand and repaint the wheels to either red or black. The new paint will be all black with red decals and stripes.
