89 VTR Clutch lever

Postby Phatcraft » Fri Aug 09, 2013 11:08 pm

Hey guys new to the forum and to world of the VTR 250. I recently purchased a 1989 VTR 250 for my wife's birthday. She had one years ago as her first bike. Anyway I purchased new brake and clutch levers as the ones on it were quite bent. The brake lever went on fine but the clutch lever I ordered (Bike master 07-0477) Looks completely different then the one on the bike. From looking at some pictures it looks like this bike may have a non stock mirror/clutch assembly on the bars. Here are some pics and any help figuring out what I have would be most appreciated.

Anyone? Do either of these levers look right for this bike?

Welcome to the forum. Kind of quiet around here ;)

yes, the odd mirrors are correct. I don't know why there were different sets of mirrors for whichever years they were on.

I take it the bottom one is the new one? Looks like a brake lever (or similar to one) to me with the large nub sticking off to the side. It would actuate the brake light switch. I could be wrong. I'm sure you know how they work, not trying to offend or anything.

If you get a torch and put that brake lever in a vice you can bend it back very easily. It will scar it but then a wire wheel can take that off. I've done it several times.

If you search bikebandit for lever, it's the schematic that has 3 matches under switch. It's their own part number though. I don't know if the clutch lever will fit from the CBR or the brake.. it's been a while.

Food for thought, gotta get to work.

THIS IS THE LEVER YOU WANT:
pic coming soon

The rest of this is info for kicks. This is really frustrating.. I'm in the process of contacting ebay members that are selling "the one we need" to verify it is actually correct.
(11/26/2013 - I noticed the link I had posted and picture was gone so I've pretty much rewritten the entire post)

The image I added says it all..

http://www.bikemaster.com/street_levers.html

TOP LEFT / BLACK LEVER = . . . . . . . . . Brake lever
LOWER RIGHT / CHROME LEVER = . . . . Clutch lever
*NOTICE: THIS IS THE INCORRECT CLUTCH LEVER FOR OUR VTR 250'S - SEE FIRST POST FOR COMPARISON*
street_levers_large.jpg

Street Levers info: VTR250 Interceptor VTR 88-90 ----- (Brake) 07-0427 - B - 10.99 ----- (Clutch) 07-0477 - B - 10.99
(I'm not even sure how one orders from this site ^^ ?? There's no buy option)

So they keep shipping the "07-1254" clutch lever, which they state: "Motion Pro Clutch Lever Black Fits Honda Interceptor". This lever fits an "Interceptor", The VFR700F, VFR700F2, and VFR800. It also fits many other bikes as well but it is obviously the wrong "interceptor" lever. The top brake lever should fit the vtr, I believe. The bottom, chrome, is the big interceptor and VFR clutch lever and is the one that they keep sending to folks. Another number that seems to be the same clutch lever is "140210" or "14-0210". Motion pro has since removed the link and image I had previously used for examples from their site.. so I found the one image again and saved it.

I may edit this more concerning the 07-0427 and 07-0477 #'s

So they sent me the right box with the wrong lever in it? What a pain, I guess I will let bike bandit know and see what they want to do.

Uh, no, you ordered a lever for the LARGE Honda Interceptors. That's a HYDRAULIC clutch lever.

That weird, I double checked with bikemaster who makes the lever and their site says:
VTR250 Interceptor VTR 88-90 07-0427 B 10.99 07-0477 B

The second number is the clutch 07-0477 which is the one I ordered

any recommendations on where to buy the correct lever? they list the other interceptors as 07-1254 I wonder if they have them backwards?

Thanks for the help guys!

I can't help you with bikemaster but I have a clutch lever that is correct, Honda P/N 53178-KVO- 670.

It has rash on the ball end but otherwise is straight. The rash can be filled with JB-Weld shaped and painted. I've done this before and it isn't hard to do if you just a bit handy with a file and sandpaper.

It is your for the shipping cost if you want it. I'll guess that USPS would be about $4.00

PM me if you want it and provide a name and address.

I have to disagree that he ordered the wrong one, XRay. Especially after all the research I did and the second checking and verifying..>>

Phatcraft, bikebandit should take care of you. If they find that lever worth enough to send a call tag for, then that's up to them. I'm guessing it will be a borderline decision for you to keep it or send it back. But I wouldn't pay to ship it back, that's for sure. This is quite an inconvenience and it was someone's mistake in distribution.

Or you can go with John's very considerate offer.

btw, I'd be interested to see the rest of your VTR. You should start a "new member" thread and add some pics for everyone. The pink tank has me curious.
