In storage for 10 + years - what steps to get her running?

Postby RustyRider » Tue Jun 05, 2018 10:35 am

Happy Tuesday from a brand new Member and recently retired Soldier!

I’ve got a 1990 Honda VTR. She’s been in storage for last 10-12 years. She looks fine.
Was emptied before stored.

I want to get back on road and want to get her back on road.

What advice do you have to get her back on road after long storage and no use?
I have called various Honda dealerships and service centers but they won’t touch her or give her a “once-over” because she is older than 10 years.

Thoughts? Advice?

My motorcycle mechanical knowledge is minimal. I know planes and tanks and cars.

I am in the south Atlanta area.

Welcome to the forum. Let us know your location, one of us may be nearby.

Almost everything needs to be checked and/or replaced.
So, get a Service manual
https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=1990+vtr250+service+manual&_sacat=0&_sop=15

Get a genuine Honda manual and it needs to cover the 1990 model becasue there are differences between the 88/89 and the 90 model.

1. check gas tank for rust: clean & coat the inside if needed before you try to start the engine.
2. replace the battery. Get a AGM style battery
3. Replace the tires before you ride the bike.
4. Replace the chain before riding the bike

4. While the gas tank is off, replace the sparkplugs. I suggest the NGK iridium plugs

5. Check to see that the brakes work and do not bind to the rotor or drum.

A. After the engine is functional, replace the coolant.
B. After getting the bike to be ride-able, replace the brake fluid.

That pretty much covers it unless you need a seat cover or mirrors or a paint job.

A great bike to start riding and learning to maintain.

WELCOME to the site, Rusty Rider!

Thank you for your service :!:

ExTex is on the right path.
Fresh fluids and a gentle beginning will be good.
Might even want to spritz some oil on top of the cylinders before you crank it for the first time.
Usually a long-term storage would be to fog the cylinders before hand, so there may be a little surface rust in there.

After your first short ride (when you get that far), I would change the oil & filter again. Maybe after 30 gentle miles of slowly raising the revs.
The tire I pulled off my '90 a month ago was over 10 yrs old, but ride-able (granted if it were a slow pace).

B4 you ride, check the charging system output. should be between 13.5-14.5 DC volts, measured across the battery terminals @ 5000 rpm. ;)

suggest you remove the fuel taNk and flush out any debris that may have collected at the bottom. clean the screen in the petcock bottom.

no need to replace tires or chain for your first few rides. chain may be OK and not need replacement.

depending upon storage conditions, carbs may need cleaning. :o

you could use a small shot of starting fluid to get it running, but if it only fires on that or if only runs at full choke, carbs need cleaning.

after long storAge you may need to inspect air filter for deterioration or mouse nests. :?

This is great info!

Keep the recommendations coming.

Please remember - I’m looking at a bike that’s been quiet and sitting for years.

Thanks

Since I was asked to point it out again:

ya know, I have reconsidered all of the suggestions here....

I now HIGHLY recommend that you ship your bike to me and let me take care of it.
:)

I'll fix it up, get it running great, beef it up a little, ride it, pipe n jet it, get new suspension parts in it and race the piss out of it for a couple years.
Then I will ship it back to you, stripped of all the goodies I had added on.
It should be fully tested and ready for you by then.

I'll do this because I care about you...

I knew I found the right place to learn about my bike.

So few people would take such a caring, selfless interest in my predicament to offer that kind of assistance.

I’d like to say I appreciate your recommendation.
