Minor Frame Damage?

Postby Thedien » Sun Mar 06, 2016 3:37 am

Hi all,

I own an '89 VTR 250, and have been wondering about this for a while now,
I've notice a couple small clusters of cracks just under the seat, and was wondering as to whether or not they mattered.
E.G. will the bike just fall apart completely one day?
If I were to sell it (which I have been thinking about) would this be O.K? Or a big turn-off for a potential buyer.
I've been riding it for 10,000 KMs, and have had no problem, runs like a little tank.

Thanks guys!

Welcome aboard,

I don't think that what I see is a cracked frame. It looks to me like a sticker that has started to come apart.

I would try a bit of sandpaper on it to see if it can be removed and expose the metal frame underneath it. I would probably go after some of the rust that we see and touch up the paint after.

Thanks john!

After an instense session of hardcore sandpapering (I'm kidding it took like 20 minutes) I have four lovely shiny spots. As to touching up the paint, would you recommend the whole frame, or just the recently sanded parts? And I'm very colourblind, so I'd have no idea how to go about matching paints, thoughts?

Thanks again

Good deal that!

No cracks in the frame I take it.

To paint the whole frame properly meas a frame off restoration. Not that I'm suggesting that though they are fun to do. I would sand and paint whatever I could get to where rust is present.

About color just have the nice helpful hardware man have a look at it and select whatever is close. Doing touch-ups will be obvious anyway, so no worries if the color match is off a bit.

Gray primer, then some krylon dull aluminum.
