Choke Cable

Postby ad.vantage » Fri Feb 24, 2017 7:37 pm

Ok so I just got into my happy new project, a 1990 VTR 250. Removing the carbs, unscrewing the choke cables from the carbs... snap. Plastic nut broke. Look up the part. Unobtainable. Ebay, nothing. No parts bikes being sold anywhere near me. I'm devastated. Anyone have a resource or some helpful advice? Alternatives? If not, I guess I have a bike to part out. Such a little part... took the whole bike out.

Sorry to hear about another VTR without a working choke cable. We've had several discussions on the topic, so far no easy replacements.

You might not need working chokes if you don't ride below about 60 F. and have well-adjusted carbs. For maintenance, choke cables should get lubed every 2-3 years to preserve them and avoid rust.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. This listing on Ebay has a complete choke cable - and as a bonus, you get two carburetors!

Alternatively, I wonder whether one of the new 3D printers could make the nut?

Just checked my "emergency" choke cable that I purchased during a recent trip to Japan... Wait a sec... No plastic nuts!

Started swapping over the plastic connectors from my old cable to the nicer one I picked up in Japan. For some reason the shorter cable is just about 5mm shorter than the original and just enough that I can't get the spring and end cap into place!!! I can't believe it - must be off a different bike, spada or something?... So close - I guess I'm back to using the old cable and will be on the lookout for another replacement.
