Wanted: petcock selector knob for '90 VTR250

Parts for a 22+ year old bike can be hard to find. Hopefully you'll find what you need right here.

Wanted: petcock selector knob for '90 VTR250

Postby wkdenton » Tue Aug 02, 2016 10:58 am

Hi all,

Bill Denton here from PA, USA. I'm looking for a petcock selector knob, old one got thrown away by mistake (long, sad story). If no one has one to sell, perhaps I could get some accurate measurements to fab something up? Total length is the most important measurement, but would also like the diameter of the shaft and knob. Pretty sure I can fab one from a 5/16" 8-pt socket and a SS knurled knob.

TIA,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I'll try to get around to measuring mine later today... Really too hot to mess in the garage but I should be able to get it off and take it into the hose to measure.
No one will have one to sell. They are really hard to find in functional shape.
Shaft OD= 14.5 mm
Shaft length = 42.5mm
Flange thickness= 3mm
Flange diameter: 52.5 mm (Flange diameter is larger than the h9ole opening in the side panel.)
Handle thickness: 10mm
Handle diameter: 41mm
Total length: 51mm (approx) (flange thickness is not uniform)
Square hole: 9mm x 5mm deep

I think it will be much easier to fab something that will work rather than to try to duplicate original.
Make it like an old rollerskate key that you remove when not using.

ride safely,

I'll have the knob in the house until tomorrow morning if you need a different/better measurement.

Dear extex,

Thanks very much for your measurement data, I really appreciate it. Please verify the following for my knowledge:

1) the 42.5 mm shaft length you reported is measured to the underside of the back of the flange?

2) the flange goes "behind" the bodywork panel, correct? In other words, you shouldn't have to remove the selector knob first before you can remove the body panel?

Just checking, because I haven't seen this bike in compete condition for a number of years.

Thanks again and best regards...

Yes, these were simple measurements with a vernier caliper

2) the flange goes "behind" the bodywork panel, correct? In other words, you shouldn't have to remove the selector knob first before you can remove the body panel?
Yes, I had to remove the seat and the left side panel to remove the knob.
Another reason for fabricating a simpler replacement lever

All -

Will the specs listed for the '90 also be the same for an '89? My petcock lever/knob could not be found after the mechanic installed a carb on my '89 vtr 250.

Is there any other way to select "Off" without a fabricated knob? A friend might be able to fabricate something but it would be if he has the time.

Some of the smaller Honda 4-wheeler have a an ON/OFF knob that looks a lot like the VTR250.
Unfortunately, I couldn't get the dealer to give me any information about the units.

It looks like a possibility to me.
